In other parts of the nation and in Prescott, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) generally causes a lot of buzz. Studies and media reports contributed to the initial frenzy surrounding the treatment, but in recent years, the therapy has proven quite effective. At the Women’s Health and Healing Center in Prescott Valley, hormone replacement therapy is one of the primary methods for treating menopausal symptoms.
Understanding the context of older hormone replacement studies
Historically, hormone replacement therapy became a controversial issue when studies showed that the use of certain manufactured hormones increased the risk for cancer. Once the media got wind of the results from these studies by the Women’s Health Initiative, this virtually ended all use of HRT for quite some time.
The study failed to note the two types of hormones most commonly used in hormone replacement therapy. The two primary hormone sources were (CEE) Conjugated Equine Estrogen, an estrogen made from horse urine and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), a synthetic progesterone. These particular hormones were found in a host of medications including Provera,PremPro, Estratest and Cenestin among others.
Among other facts to note are that the study results proved statistically insignificant. This means that the science behind the facts was not strong enough to conclude that the use of these hormones does in fact cause cancer. Rather, the study indicated a link. Despite this fact, well-educated doctors are not using CEE today, as it is a substance foreign to the human body.
Why use bioidentical hormones
The concern over the use of synthetic and animal-derived hormones led to the use of bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical hormones are derived from natural vegetable-based sources such as wild yam root and soybeans. Structurally, these plant-derived hormones have the same molecular composition as human hormones. These hormones are compounded to emulate their human counterparts.
The primary ingredients used in bioidentical hormones include estriol, estradiol, micronized progesterone, DHEA and testosterone to alleviate the symptoms associated with premenopausal, menopause and postmenopausal symptoms.
It is too early to determine the effects of bioidentical hormones. Initial studies indicate that the risk of breast of cancer is not increased among women who use bioidentical hormone therapy for less than 5 years. However, studies have shown a slight increase in cancer risk for women who use biodentical EPT (Estrogen/Progesterone Therapy) for more than 5 years.
